Hawks drop first half of home opener

The Hawks' baseball team had trouble shaking off the cold in the home opening doubleheader against Hudson Valley Community College at Donovan Stadium at Murnane Field on Thursday.

The Hawks (2-2 conference, 6-6 overall) combined for five runs on seven hits as the Viking took a 10-5 Region III victory. Enabling the Vikings to hold an edge was three field errors.

At the plate for the Hawks, Brandon Pelose tripled before scoring. MVCC tallied solo runs in the first, second and seventh inning while also driving in two runs in the fifth. Earning RBIs for the Hawks were Matt Thompson, Bryan McGuire, Rene Adames with a sacrifice fly, and two by John Ross.

On the mound for the Hawks was Jeff Cooke (1-1) who took the loss in 4 1/3 innings. He gave up 10 runs on six hits and three walks while striking out three. Jacob Graham finished off the game for 2 2/3 innings, allowing one hit, one walk and two strikeouts.

Taking the win for the Vikings was Andrew Scaccla, who went five innings.
