The MVCC baseball team was loving the dry conditions at SUNY IT on Saturday as the Hawks swept a doubleheader away from the Clinton Community College Cougars.
In the series opener, Marcus Failing (W, 3-3) went six solid innings for the win while facing 26 batters from the mound. He allowed only three runs on six hits and two walks as the Hawks won this game 9-5. On the season, Failing has an ERA of 5.66 with 26 strikeouts and an ERA of 13.
Coming in for clean up in this first game was Stephen Scialdo for one inning of action to allow two runs on three hits and one walk.
The Hawks (13-13 overall, 8-6 in Region III) took the lead for good in the third inning with a three-run rally. The win was well in hand with a five-run rally in the fourth as Brandon Pelose went 2-for-4 at the plate for two RBIs as did Matt Thompson, but with one RBI. Bryce Patterson and Bryan McGuire both scored twice as the Hawks compiled six RBIs on eight hits and six base-on-balls.
In the second half of the doubleheader, the Hawks had an easier time figuring out the Cougars' pitching staff. MVCC won this game 16-6 on 10 hits and 10 base-on-balls.
MVCC took control of this game early with a seven-run rally in the second followed by another five runs in the third. Kyle Mapley scored three runs and a stolen base after being walked twice and Patterson, Pelose and Alex McLean each scored two runs. Thompson had two singles in the game while Scialdo had the Hawks' only extra base hit with a double.
On the mound for MVCC was Christian King (W, 2-0). He worked four innings to give up four runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four batters. Coming in for cleanup was Bryan McGuire for two innings, giving up two runs on two hits and zero walks. He struck out two as he faced nine batters in the game.
