A sluggish first half gave Herkimer College just enough of an edge to hold of a late-game run by the Mohawk Valley Community College men's basketball team as the Generals headed east on Route 5S with an 80-63 victory.
The Generals spread out the scoring evenly with three starters tallying 13 points each and a four adding 14. This made it difficult for the Hawks' defense to key in on any one player.
At the opposite end of the court, made mistakes that led to turnover and points for the visiting Generals. MVCC made 19 turnovers that were converted to 23 points. The domination of the boards was pretty even with both teams grabbing 31 rebounds each.
The highpoint for the Hawks was their shooting from the free throw line. They made 18-of-20 for 90 percent, compared to Herkimer's 65 percent (21-32). From two-point range, the hosts shot 40.8 percent (20-49) and only 27.8 percent (5-18) from beyond the arc.
All of MVCC's starters hit double figures scoring, led by Jahcin Ingram's 14 that went along with his five rebounds. Janeel Frith scored 13 points and Tyquan Rolon finished with 12 points. Josh Ivey dominated the boards with 10 rebounds and 11 points as Tyshun Walker added 10 points.
The Hawks are home against on Wednesday, November 19, against Jefferson Community College at 8 p.m.
