Mohawk Valley Community College's women's and men's basketball team will hit the hardwood for a good cause by hosting the annual Torchia Classic on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 30-November 1, in the Performance Gymnasium of the Jorgensen Complex on the Utica Campus.
The men's portion of the tournament opens Friday at 6 p.m. when Jefferson Community College squares off with Pasco Hernando Community College. At 8 p.m., the MVCC Hawks will take on Queensborough Community College. The action continues on Saturday with the consolation game at noon and the championship matchup at 2 p.m.
The women's portion of the tournament will be a Classic format beginning at 5 p.m. on Saturday with Jefferson Community College playing Queensborough Community College followed by the Hawks playing Northampton Community College at 7 p.m. The action continues on Sunday with the consolation game at noon and the championship matchup at 2 p.m.
The Torchia Classic benefits the Anthony Torchia Memorial Scholarship, named in memory of 19-year-old Anthony Torchia whose life was ended prematurely in a tragic car accident on May 6, 2000. The Anthony Torchia Memorial Scholarship provides financial assistance to deserving students in the Electrical Engineering curriculum.
Tickets are $3 for each two-game session or a tournament pass can be purchased for $5. For MVCC students with ID, the cost is $1.
