Pete McAvoy scored 55 seconds into Wednesday’s match as the Herkimer County Community College Generals defeated Mohawk Valley Community College’s Hawks, 4-0, at Wehrum Stadium.
The Generals (9-1-0), ranked first in the NJCAA’s Division III poll, posted their seventh shutout of the season and earned their third consecutive victory. Matt Clinton assisted on McAvoy’s goal as HCCC held a 1-0 halftime lead.
James Wilson added a goal assisted by Jermaine Windster six minutes into the second half. A spectacular defensive play by MVCC’s Nick DaPrano and an off-sides call cost HCCC two scores before the Generals added goals by Brian Coyt and Preston Higgins. Mitchel White assisted on the Higgins goal.
DaPrano headed a net-bound-shot by Coyt away from the mouth of the goal and Clinton’s goal was waived off one minute later.
The Generals got goals in the 68th minute and scored again on a rebound after Chris Hanifin rejected his initial shot with 4 1/2 minutes left to play.
Hanifin was credited with 12 saves for the Hawks (6-8-0) while Triston Henry had five in his third consecutive shutout for HCCC.
