It wasn't the pretty performance for the Hawks, but in the end the Mohawk Valley Community College women's basketball team got the job done in overtime on Sunday. The Hawks flew home with a 69-65 victory over the United States Military Academy Preparatory School.

The Hawks (4-2 overall) were led in this endeavor by freshman Jhontay Giles, who exceeded expectations. In the previous five games, she was averaging 15.8 points per game, but against US Military she unleashed her talents by battling to score 23 points. These points didn't come easy as Giles had to battle on the boards for many second-chance points. She finished with 15 rebounds that helped shut down US Military in the paint.

The Hawks found themselves in the unusual position of trailing the hosts at the halftime, 35-26. But MVCC was not to be denied as the visitors scrapped to outscore the hosts 29-20 in the second half as regulation ended with a 55-55 tie.

In overtime, the Hawks pulled together their forces with both Stevie Ray and Elesha Dieudonne finishing with 14 points each as MVCC held a 14-10 edge in this period. Dieudonne also had 13 rebounds while Ray made one steal.

As a team, the Hawks shot 43.5 percent (27-62) from two-point range, but 85.7 percent (12-14) from the foul line. They also outscored the hosts' bench 13-0 and outrebounded them 52-31. MVCC also forced 19 turnovers while committing just eight.
