Lady Hawks Finish Third at the NJCAA National Tournament

The MVCC Lady Hawks finished their 2015-16 season with a 60-57 win over West Georgia Technical College in the third-place game of the NJCAA National Women's Basketball Tournament.

Freshman Adrienne Graves scored MV's final three points to break a 57-57 tie and lead the Hawks to victory.

West Georgia Tech outscored MVCC 21-9 in the opening quarter before Africa Williams three point basket, a jumper by Sashagaye Patterson and six points by Graves pulled MV within one.

MVCC took their first lead of the game with 1:49 left in the second quarter on a pair of free throws by Williams. Freshman Cheyenne Clark's basket with 1:09 remaining in the quarter gave MV a 34-31 halftime lead.

The Hawks opened up a 10 point lead during the third quarter before the Golden Knights ran off 9 straight points of their own to pull within one early in the fourth quarter.

Laquasia Berry's layup with 8:26 remaining put MV up three.  The Hawks used a Graves jumper and a three ball by Lilybeth Garcia to extended the lead to 8 with 6:22 left in the contest. West Georgia Tech went on one more run to tie the game at 57-57 with 3:48 to play.

Graves was fouled grabbing a rebound with :41 left. She went 1-2 from the line and then scored on her own missed jumped to seal the win for the Hawks.

Africa Williams was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Top seeded Roxbury defeated #2 seed Northland (who defeated the Hawks last night) 61-57 to win the NJCAA National Title.

Congratulations to the Lady Hawks and Coach Carpenter on a great season.  Special thank you to John Sorce and Brookdale CCC for providing us with photos from the consolation game.
