Hawks advance to defend national crown

The game was up for grabs throughout the first half of Friday's semifinal game at the National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association's Division III Women's Soccer National Championship Tournament held at Tompkins-Cortland Community College.

But the MVCC Hawks took complete control in the second half and dominated control of the ball to defeat Holyoke Community College, 3-0. This victory advances the Hawks to the championship game on Sunday as MVCC will defend its national crown.

The first half of the game was tight despite a goal by Meghan Carlo off a pass from Ashley O'Connor. But the Hawks broke the game open some 10 minutes into the second half as Carlo returned the favor by assisting on O'Connor's goal.

The lid was slammed shut later in the second half as Nicole Burline scored off another pass from Carlo. The Hawks (17-2) outshot Holyoke 8-6 as MVCC's Vanessa Jecko made six saves.
