Hawks extend home winning streak to three

The Mohawk Valley Community College women's basketball team came out shooting and didn't stop until the Hawks had mowed down the Herkimer College squad en route to an 85-34 Mountain Valley Conference victory Wednesday evening on the Utica Campus.

The Hawks (3-2 overall, 1-1 conference) took control from the very beginning as they extended their lead to 41-17 at the half despite a poor shooting percentage from beyond the three-point arc. The key to this victory was the Hawks ability to force the Generals to turnover the ball. Herkimer College committed 28 turnovers to the Hawks' 18.

The second key factor was on the boards as MVCC outrebounded the Generals 54-27. With such a big lead in the first half, the Hawks were able to go deep into the bench, which combined for 29 points. This also allowed some of the younger players a chance to show their stuff.

With the scoring so spread out, the Hawks had only four players in double figures. Jhontay Giles lead the way for MVCC with 18 points along with seven rebounds.  Sophomores Stevie Ray and Shelbey Kralik both poured in 13 points along with five steals and five assists by Ray. Kralik made three steals as the Hawks finished with a total of 22.

Coming off the bench to score 14 points was Imani Pierce. She also grabbed five rebounds, made four steals and handed out two assists. The Hawks shot 44.6 percent (33-74) from two-point range and 26.1 percent (6-23) from beyond the arc.

Alexandra Hardy led Herkimer with 10 points.

The Hawks are home against on Wednesday, November 19, against Jefferson Community College at 6 p.m.
