#6 MVCC Hawks Battle Back to Earn 3-3 Draw with #5 Herkimer
In a top-10 showdown filled with intensity and momentum swings, the #6-ranked Mohawk Valley Community College men's soccer team battled to a thrilling 3-3 draw with #5 Herkimer College on Saturday evening.
The Hawks struck first in the 13th minute when Mario Camacho delivered a perfectly placed cross to Souayibou Diop, who calmly slotted it home for an early 1-0 lead. MVCC carried that advantage into halftime.
However, the second half saw the Generals come alive, scoring three goals in a 14-minute span to flip the match on its head and take a 3-1 lead. Refusing to fold, the Hawks responded in the 70th minute as Diop netted his second goal of the night—again off a Camacho assist—cutting the deficit to one.
MVCC continued to press and were rewarded in the 86th minute when Francesco Tagliavini buried the equalizer after a clever assist from Ahmadou Amar, leveling the score at 3-3.
Goalkeeper Anderson Costa made three key saves to help preserve the draw, while Herkimer's keeper recorded six saves in a back-and-forth battle between two of the nation's top programs.
The Hawks now turn their attention to their next matchup on Wednesday, October 4, when they travel to Watertown to face Jefferson Community College in a Region III contest.
